As Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn travelled through America’s major commercial centres over the past two weeks – a stint in New York, a day in Washington DC and time in San Francisco – he was struck by the sense of almost sheepishness from the people he met.

“Some of those meetings started with almost an apology for what was going on,” Comyn tells Chanticleer, referring to the global turmoil unleashed by US President Donald Trump’s tariff war.
